Ivan

Species: Rough-toothed dolphin, (Steno bredanensis, offshore species)

Stranding Date: 2004

Location: Cape San Blas, Florida

~~~
Ivan was rescued on Cape San Blas, FL, near St. Joe Peninsula State Park, shortly after Hurricane Ivan in 2004. There were five rough-toothed dolphins who were beached (this is called a “mass stranding”). While all five originally made it safely to Gulf World, only 3 survived. Ivan was only about 9 months old at the time and was deemed non-releasable by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA) due to mother dependency and lack of survival skills. He now calls Gulf World Marine Park his permanent home, along with Doris who arrived with him from the mass stranding.
