Location: Gulf County, Florida
Circumstances: Found washed ashore
“Toasted Caramel” a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle was found washed ashore west of the Indian Pass boat ramp in Indian Pass, Florida.
The animal was showing signs of debilitated sea turtle syndrome, with multiple symptoms, but no clear cause. He/she was lethargic, emaciated and possessed a heavy barnacle load. Symptoms can also include low levels of electrolytes in the blood, evidence of infection in the blood or lungs, and weak bodies. However, while these animals arrive in poor condition, medical treatment can have very positive effects.
Toasted Caramel continues to make progress, both in appetite and swimming abilities. His/her diet includes capelin, herring and squid. He/she receives antibiotics, regular checkups, and close observation from the volunteers each day.
